Second malignancies after Hodgkin's disease: the Munich experience

Abstract: The occurrence of second malignancies (SM) is an important late event following the treatment of Hodgkin's disease (HD). We sought to determine the incidence, the risk factors, and the prognosis of SM in our population of patients with HD. A total of 1120 patients diagnosed with HD were registered at six participating institutions in Munich (calendar period 1974-1994). The mean follow-up for the development of SM was 9.1 years. A cumulative treatment score was calculated for both radio- and chemotherapy. The r… Show more

“…Living habits may be an important contributing factor, such as unhealthy diet, tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption (Keshishian et al, 1998;Gursel et al, 2011), lack of exercise and so on. Not surprisingly, breast cancer was the most frequent first and second tumor among females in the present study, and consistent with the literature reported (Munker et al, 1999). Interestingly, a high association breast/breast cancer occurring together was observed.…”

“…Many studies have addressed the incidence of second malignancy after treatment for childhood cancers and common adult tumours [2,5,7,8]. These studies, whilst instructive for specific populations, should not necessarily be used to estimate risk for patients without malignant disease.…”

“…This very rare case occurred 3 years after the end of initial therapy, a relatively long time when compared with previous studies. 1 Her cumulative intensity of cytotoxic drugs was smaller than the average intensity measured in previously reported cases, 8 but the previous irradiation might have increased the risk of developing secondary AML. Because her AML was more aggressive than the relapsed HL, we decided to give treatment for the secondary AML precedence over HL, and the patient successfully achieved CR in regard to both diseases.…”
