Second Generation Biobutanol: An Update

Abstract: Butanol, a rising star in biofuel, can be produced by two approaches, petrochemically and biologically. Currently, the most promising route for butanol production is by fermentation using Clostridium species through an anaerobic condition. However, similar to other biofuels, feedstock has greatly influenced the production of biobutanol and the search for inexpensive and abundant raw material is an absolute requirement for a cost-effective process. Second-generation biobutanol which is produced from lignocellul… Show more

“…However, it is important to highlight that the choice of pretreatment (physical and/or chemical) of the lignocellulosic material can lead to the generation of undesirable by-products, e.g., furfural (FF) and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), in greater or lesser proportions, affecting the growth of microorganisms (AMIRI; KARIMI, 2018). Butanol, for example, is an alcohol that has attracted the attention of researchers for presenting properties, such as higher miscibility with gasoline, higher energy density, lower volatility, and better biodegradability (ZETTY-ARENAS et al, 2019), being a promising biofuel, beyond other applications in plastics, solvents, paints and adhesives industry (BURHANI et al, 2019;ZHEN et al, 2020).…”
