Reviving land and restoring landscapes: policy convergence between forest landscape restoration and land degradation neutrality

“…The Bonn Challenge is creating opportunities to integrate the landscape approach into country strategies to balance restoration. The 2 nd Bonn Challenge Progress Report presents results on action from in-depth application of the Barometer in a subset of countries, with some information presented on an additional 12 countries from a desk review and interviews (Dave et al, 2019). To date, 57 governments and private sector entities have pledged over approximately 170 million hectares towards the Bonn Challenge target, with potential climate change mitigation benefit of 15.66 GtCO 2 e. Progress is variable among countries, and much remains to be done to meet the 2020 goals and the even more ambitious target of 2030.…”

“…The Barometer helps pledgers to evaluate progress and identify the impacts of their restoration efforts, and to assess bottlenecks and opportunities to facilitate continued action. Pilot assessments have been made to test the Barometer protocol in 19 countries (Dave et al, 2019). The Barometer focuses on both the results of restoration interventions such as hectares, jobs generated, carbon sequestered, biodiversity areas enhanced, and the required conditions behind it e.g.…”

Challenges remain in implementation and enforcement, as noted in Kenya and Uganda for LDN and FLR processes and the Bonn Challenge Barometer (Dave, 2019). In most countries that have committed to the Bonn Challenge or carried out ROAM assessments, cross-sectoral platforms have been formally established to guide decision making on FLR opportunities and implementation.…”

Why Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change Must Be Grounded in Sound Biodiversity Science

“…When it comes to high level multilateral pledges for nature the current focus is on forests. The Bonn Challenge-launched in by IUCN and Germany in 2011 and currently involving 56 nations-is a global effort to restore 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded land by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030 5 ; the New York Declaration on Forests -signed in 2014 by 37 governments, 63 NGOs, 53 multinational companies and 16 indigenous community groups -pledges to halve deforestation by 2020 and end it by 2030 6 ; and the Trillion Trees Partnership is a new 25-year initiative to restore one trillion trees by 2050, the number needed to reverse the global decline in tree cover 7 . Such initiatives have inspired a significant number of private companies to voluntarily commit to eradicating deforestation from their supply chain.…”
