Sebaceous adenitis in the Akita: clinical observations, histopathology and heredity

Abstract: Ninety-seven pure-bred Akitas were examined clinically and histologically for sebaceous adenitis. The diagnosis was established histologically in 23 Akitas by demonstrating an inflammatory reaction targeted against the sebaceous glands or a reduction in the number of glands. The clinical course of sebaceous adenitis in the Akita was similar to that seen in other breeds. The first skin lesions occurred mainly on the dorsal midline and ears. Compared with the Poodle, the age at first onset of the disease was mor… Show more

“…This is supported by the finding that ciclosporin—when administered before the sebaceous glands are completely lost—produces a drug-dependent clinical and structural response (Linek and others 2005). As certain breeds are more commonly affected than others, a genetic predisposition is suspected and has been proposed for both the Standard Poodle and the Akita (Reichler and others 2001, Hernblad Tevell and others 2008, Pedersen and others 2012). To the authors’ knowledge there is no reported predilection in Elos at this time.…”

“…Additional features may include orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, follicular keratosis, mild superficial perivascular dermatitis with neutrophils, eosinophils and plasma cells, or mast cells (Reichler et al . ) or mast cells and lymphocytes (Bardagi et al . 2010), and evidence of secondary pyoderma (intraepidermal pustules, folliculitis and furunculosis).…”
