Seawater Temperature and Wind Speed Dependences and Diurnal Variation of Ambient Noise at the Snapping Shrimp Colony in Shallow Water of Southern Sea of Korea

Abstract: The seawater temperature and wind dependences and diurnal variation of the ambient noise at the snapping shrimp colony in shallow water of the southern sea of Korea were investigated. The ambient noise levels are significantly affected by the snapping shrimp sound, when the bottom seawater temperature increases and the wind speed decreases. However, they are not exceptively almost affected by the snapping shrimp sound when the wind speed decreases at low seawater temperatures (<10 °C). In diurnal variation,… Show more

“…Although our monitoring program targeted only a single site, the dataset provides a rare opportunity to examine in detail the acoustic behavior of snapping shrimp across multiple temporal scales. To date, only a handful of studies have investigated the acoustic behavior of snapping shrimp with similar temporal resolution and duration (e.g., [ 31 , 33 ]). Much of what is known about the acoustic ecology of these animals is therefore based on short duration field surveys.…”

“…Much of what is known about the acoustic ecology of these animals is therefore based on short duration field surveys. Furthermore, most temporal analysis has looked exclusively at the pattern of high frequency acoustic energy (e.g., [ 31 , 33 ]), as opposed to the more data-rich snap detection approach implemented in this study.…”

“…Because the rate of snapping varies temporally in response to changes in temperature, light and other environmental variables (e.g., Watanabe et al, 2002;Jung et al, 2012;Bohnenstiehl et al, 2016;Lillis et al, 2017), these data can be used to investigate the response of the acoustic metrics to variations in the rate of broadband snapping activity. Both ACI and H were calculated in the 4-20 kHz frequency band using a 30 s analysis time window.…”
