Seatbelt Injury Causing Small Bowel Devascularisation: Case Series and Review of the Literature

Abstract: The use of seatbelts has increased significantly in the last twenty years, leading to a decrease in mortality from road traffic accidents (RTA). However, this increase in seatbelt use has also led to a change in the spectrum of injuries from RTA; abdominal injuries, particularly intestinal injuries have dramatically increased with the routine use of seatbelts. Such intestinal injuries frequently result from improper placement of the “lap belt”. We present 3 cases in which passengers wearing a seatbelt sustaine… Show more

“…Along those same lines, while ISS was overall higher but not statistically significant in the blunt group, when looking at organ specific injury severity, there was a marked disparity of higher injury grades in the blunt patients. The higher injury severity may be explained by mechanisms of shearing and crushing forces that belong to the ''seatbelt syndrome'' of blunt trauma [13,14]. In addition, our data supported higher rates of neurologic injuries in the blunt group and one can speculate that the degree of systemic inflammation may also be subsequently higher with such multiple injuries.…”

“…All GIIs resulted from traffic accidents, with injuries resulting from automobile seat belts (n = 6) leading the list, followed by bicycle/moped handle injuries (n = 3) and traffic pedestrian accident (n = 1). Seat beltYrelated GIIs have been reported in adults 4,5 ; however, this is the first study to report a series of pediatric and adolescent blunt GIIs (BIIs) resulting directly from seat belts.…”
