Seasonal variations of water quality at Doreri Gulf, Manokwari, West Papua

Abstract: The character of Manokwari City’s coastal waters is strongly influenced by activity on the mainland. The degradation in Sawaibu Gulf’s water quality has an impact on water quality nearby, as well as the waters of the Field Work Center (BLK), Lemon Island, and Tanjung Manggewa, which is part of Doreri Gulf. The purpose of this study was to determine the water quality in Doreri Gulf according on location and season. In February-April (rainy season) and August-October (dry season) 2020, the research was carried o… Show more

“…As shown in table 1 the temperature of water changes with seasons and it was range from 12 C⁰ in winter to 31 C⁰ in summer. It is well known that water temperature can affect the water quality significantly since it can affect the growth of microorganisms as well as the dissolving of oxygen as well [15]. The pH value of the samples ranges from slightly acidic in both summer and autumn to alkaline in both winter and spring, while the highest was recorded in winter with (8.4).…”

“…Reduced turbidity levels in Somnath beach water may be due to the continuous mixing of diluted sewage with freshwater. TSS has an inevitable role in imparting turbidity and they are known to absorb heat from sun; thus, they tend to increase the seawater temperature, and in turn, they decrease the dissolved oxygen (DO) content (USEPA 2000 ; Sembel et al 2021 ). Microbial community dwelling in the aquatic ecosystem degrades the organic matter present at the bottom through DO consumption (Moresco et al 2012 ; Fuhrman et al 2015 ).…”

“…4b). In technical terms, turbidity can be defined as a measurement of the amount of light that travels through water and is brought about by light-scattering suspended solid particles (Sembel et al, 2021). Turbidity of the water layer was also caused by the presence of suspended and dissolved particles, including organic matter, muck, microbes, clay, colloids, and floating items that did not settle right away.…”
