Mussels may concentrate pollutants, with possibly significant side effects on human health. Therefore, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from two sites of the Moroccan Atlantic coast (Jorf Lasfar [JL], an industrial site, and Oualidia [OL], a vegetable-growing area), were subjected to biochemical analyses to quantify the presence of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, and Pb) and to establish the lipid profile: fatty acid, cholesterol, oxysterol, phytosterol and phospholipid content. In addition, mussel lipid extracts known to accumulate numerous toxic components were tested on murine pancreatic β-cells (MIN6), and their biological activities were measured with various flow cytometric and biochemical methods to determine their impacts on cell death induction, organelle dysfunctions (mitochondria, lysosomes, and peroxisomes), oxidative stress and insulin secretion. The characteristics of JL and OL lipid extracts were compared with those of commercially available mussels from Spain (SP) used for human consumption. OL and JL contained heavy metals, high amounts of phospholipids, and high levels of oxysterols; the [(unsaturated fatty acids)/(saturated fatty acids)] ratio, which can be considered a sign of environmental stress leading to lipid peroxidation, was low. On MIN6 cells, JL and OL lipid extracts were able to trigger cell death. This event was associated with overproduction of H2 O2 , increased catalase activity, a decreased GSH level, lipid peroxidation and stimulation of insulin secretion. These effects were not observed with SP lipid extracts. These data suggest that some components from OL and JL lipid extracts might predispose to pancreatic dysfunctions. Epidemiological studies would be needed to assess the global risk on human health and the metabolic disease incidence in a context of regular seafood consumption from the OL and JL areas.

Corals incorporate major and trace elements in their tissues and skeletons, acting as good proxies for contaminant inputs over time. This incorporation occurs by a variety of mechanisms and depends on the bioavailability of elements. Corals are very susceptible to metal contamination during sample collection. As such, pre-treatment procedures need to include a decontamination step. The high Na and Ca concentrations in the matrix make the determination of trace metals an analytical challenge. The present paper reviews all the information published on coral sample pretreatments, metal determinations in corals, and also discusses the use of coral to monitor metal contamination.Keywords: monitoring; contamination; CaCO 3 matrix. INTRODUÇÃONo ambiente aquático, elementos presentes em nível traço e em concentrações maiores podem ocorrer na fração dissolvida, coloidal, associados ao sedimento (material particulado e de fundo) e também aos tecidos biológicos. Os metais, em especial Cd, Pb e Hg, afetam a biota marinha, tanto pela mobilização das espécies metálicas, da fração particulada para a dissolvida, seguida pela assimilação da fase aquosa, como por meio da ingestão de sedimentos pela macrofauna bentônica, seguida da assimilação dos metais pelos intestinos. 1Os íons metálicos ocorrem nas formas livres, como complexos simples, com ligantes inorgânicos, quelatos, e ligantes orgânicos multidentados, adsorvidos na superfície de partículas. Os ligantes orgânicos podem ocorrer naturalmente, na forma de macromoléculas (e. g. proteínas, polissacarídeos, lipídios, lignina), contendo muitos sítios de ligação, ou como moléculas pequenas de origem antropogênica (e. g. cianetos, fluoretos, amônia).2 Os íons metálicos ligam--se à matéria orgânica, através do processo de quelação, formando complexos ou compostos de coordenação, que, eventualmente, se precipitam para o sedimento de fundo, afetando a biodisponibilidade dos elementos majoritários e minoritários. Os sedimentos de fundo são um depósito importante de contaminantes, não apenas de metais, mas também de contaminantes orgânicos, como os hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos. A ressuspensão de sedimentos de fundo contaminados pode contribuir para o aumento da biodisponibilidade de contaminantes para os organismos aquáticos, 3 atuando como fonte de contaminantes para a coluna d'água.A biodisponibilidade de espécies metálicas, numa perspectiva ambiental, pode ser definida como a concentração de metais livres e disponíveis na água ou associada aos sedimentos, sendo passíveis de incorporação, ao longo do tempo, aos tecidos dos organismos, por todas as vias, e podendo bioacumular e causar efeitos tóxicos. A bioacumulação, por sua vez, é o acúmulo líquido de um ou mais elementos-traço nos tecidos de um organismo, como resultado do consumo de todas as rotas ou fontes disponíveis de alimento (e. g. água, sedimento etc.)...

The objective of this study was to develop an analytical method for protecting Jiaozhou Bay clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The R. philippinarum samples were collected from three major producing areas (Jiaozhou Bay, Nantong coast, and Dalian coast) in China, and the Meretrix meretrix samples were from Nantong coast in May and September 2014. The contents of 46 elements in all clam samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The obtained data were analyzed using analysis of variance, principal component analysis, and stepwise linear discriminant analysis. The results showed that both the geographical origin and season affected elemental contents in R. philippinarum. Seven elements (Mg, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, and U) independent of seasonal variation were selected as good indicators for discriminating the geographical origin of clams. Based on the discriminant models built with these seven elements, the predictions of the geographic origin gave an overall correct classification rate of 100.0 % and a cross-validation rate of 97.2 %. In addition, R. philippinarum and M. meretrix had their own elemental fingerprinting patterns and could be distinguished. Therefore, the multi-element analysis combined with multivariate statistics can be used for the identification of Jiaozhou Bay clam with PDO.
