Seasonal variations in the chemical composition of vine-grape leaf surface

Abstract: Surface leaf metabolites of two seedlings of a Bulgarian winemaking cultivar Storgozia I(1) were analyzed in two seasons - summer (July) and autumn (October). The resistance towards some fungal pathogens of one of the plants was estimated as superior to the resistance of the other one. Significant seasonal variations in the chemical constituents of the two seedlings were observed. The main metabolites of the summer samples were sterols, terpenes, fatty acids and heterocyclic compounds. In autumn, sterol and fa… Show more

“…Nevertheless, results appear promising indicating that there are spectral features of leaves that can be correlated with the taxonomic type of soil. It is known that leaves metabolites vary significantly over the vegetative cycle, especially during the ripening period (Batovska et al, 2008). Thus, measurements should be made on a relatively short period of time and with the same weather conditions for spectra to be comparable (ideally performing measurements on the same day).…”

“…1 Their qualitative and quantitative composition varies from one grapevine to another depending on age, breeding conditions, season, etc. 2,3 The study of these variations is an important task because it can have implications for a better understanding and manipulation of the biochemical processes related to the adaptability of grapevines. Furthermore, there is an increasing demand for the development of grapevine varieties with increased disease resistance and stress tolerance.…”

“…4 Recently, the first, to the best of our knowledge, investigation of the seasonal variations of the leaf surface composition of grapevine seedlings was conducted. 3 The obtained metabolic profiles of summer samples included terpenes, sterols, fatty acids and heterocyclic compounds. Most of the components underwent alteration in autumn.…”

“…In parallel, GC/MS metabolite profiling of contrast phenotypes prior and after inoculation with P. viticola in controlled conditions will be performed in order to select metabolite markers associated with the resistance. Several biomarkers, associated with resistance of cultivar Storgozia to downy mildew have been recently identified (4,5).…”
