Forest dynamic models predict the current and future states of ecosystems and are a nexus between physiological processes and empirical data, forest plot inventories and remote‐sensing information. The problem of biodiversity representation in these models has long been an impediment to a detailed understanding of ecosystem processes. This challenge is amplified in species‐rich and high‐carbon tropical forests. Here we describe an individual‐based and spatially explicit forest growth simulator, TROLL, that integrates recent advances in plant physiology. Processes (carbon assimilation, allocation, reproduction, and mortality) are linked to species‐specific functional traits, and the model was parameterized for an Amazonian tropical rainforest. We simulated a forest regeneration experiment from bare soil, and we validated it against observations at our sites. Simulated forest regeneration compared well with observations for stem densities, gross primary productivity, aboveground biomass, and floristic composition. After 500 years of regrowth, the simulated forest displayed structural characteristics similar to observations (e.g., leaf area index and trunk diameter distribution). We then assessed the model's sensitivity to a number of key model parameters: light extinction coefficient and carbon quantum yield, and to a lesser extent mortality rate, and carbon allocation, all influenced ecosystem features. To illustrate the potential of the approach, we tested whether variation in species richness and composition influenced ecosystem properties. Overall, species richness had a positive effect on ecosystem processes, but this effect was controlled by the identity of species rather by richness per se. Also, functional trait community means had a stronger effect than functional diversity on ecosystem processes. TROLL should be applicable to many tropical forests sites, and data requirement is tailored to ongoing trait collection efforts. Such a model should foster the dialogue between ecology and the vegetation modeling community, help improve the predictive power of models, and eventually better inform policy choices.

A toolbox of permutation tests for structural change

The supLM test for structural change is embedded into a permutation test framework for a simple location model. The resulting conditional permutation distribution is compared to the usual (unconditional) asymptotic distribution, showing that the power of the test can be clearly improved in small samples. Furthermore, the permutation test is embedded into a general framework that encompasses tools for binary and multivariate dependent variables as well as model-based permutation testing for structural change. It is also demonstrated that the methods can not only be employed for analyzing structural changes in time series data but also for recursive partitioning of cross section data. The procedures suggested are illustrated using both artificial data and empirical applications (number of youth homicides, employment discrimination data, carbon flux in tropical forests, stock returns, and demand for economics journals).

Tree water availability can affect stem respiration through impacts on growth, phloem transport or maintenance of diverse cellular processes, but little is known on this topic. Here we monitored seasonal changes in stem CO2 efflux(F s ), radial growth, sap flow and non-structural carbohydrates in trees of Quercus ilex in a Mediterranean forest stand subjected since 2003 to either partial (33%) throughfall exclusion (£) or unchanged throughfall (C). F s increased exponentially during the day by an effect of temperature, although sap flow attenuated the increase in F s during the day time. Over the year, F s also increased exponentially with increasing temperatures, but F s computed at a standard temperature of 15 °C (F s 15 ) varied by almost 4-fold among dates. F s 15 was the highest after periods of stem growth and decreased as tree water availability decreased, similarly in Cand E treatments. The decline in F s 15 was not linked to a depletion of soluble sugars, which increased when water stress was higher. The proportion of ecosystem respiration attributed to the stems was highest following stem growth (23.3%) and lowest during the peak of drought (6.5%). High within-year variability in F s 15 makes unadvisable to pool annual data of F s vs. temperature to model F s at short time scales (hours to months) in Mediterranean-type forest ecosystems. We demonstrate that water availability is an important factor governing stem C0 2 efflux and suggest that trees in Mediterranean environments acclimate to seasonal drought by reducing stem respiration. Stem respiratory rates do not seem to change after a long-term increase in drought intensity, however.
