Temporal stability in beta diversity does not guarantee surrogacy or compositional stability in a micro-phytoplankton meta¬community. In this study, we evaluated phytoplankton community organization (i.e., microalgae filtered in 20 μm mesh-sized plankton net) in a highly dynamic subtropical tidal river over three years. Specifically, we assessed temporal stability in the spatial organization of phytoplankton, the diatoms’ efficiency as an indicator (surrogate group) of ecological patterns of other phytoplankton groups, the temporal variation in species composition, and the beta diversity of a metacommunity. We performed six sampling occasions at the end of the summers and winters from 2017 to 2019 at 16 sampling points comprising a strong en¬vironmental gradient in the Guaraguaçu River, South Brazil. We tested for correlations of community structures from different periods and for correlations between diatoms species and those from other phytoplankton groups using Mantel tests. Species compositions were compared among periods using a permutational multivariate analysis of variance, and temporal variation in metacommunity beta diversity was evaluated using null models. There was temporal stability in the spatial dissimilarities of communities. Diatoms were poorly correlated with the other phytoplankton groups. The temporal stability in spatial structure, a facet of beta diversity, was in line with the temporal stability in compositional variation – a measurement of metacommuni¬ty beta diversity. Our results also showed that such stability was not static, since community compositions varied over time, mainly between seasons. We conclude that even in a highly dynamic tidal river, the temporal stability of spatial organization may indicate that the spatial gradient is so strong that it maintains spatial structuring over time. Such patterns were maintained even with the dynamic species changes over seasons. The fact that different phytoplankton groups do not respond similarly to the spatial gradient reinforces that microalgae should be analyzed separately in ecological studies, and long-term monitoring should consider different algal groups for a complete assessment of ecological patterns.

Changes in richness, diversity, evenness and abundance of phytoplankton in relation to environmental variables and tributary entrances were studied along 30 km of the Paraná River downstream Itaipu Reservoir. A high number of taxa was found, 315. The Paraná River differed from the tributaries Iguaçu River and Monday River. The phytoplankton and limnological characteristics of the Paraná River changed after the entrance of these tributaries. Higher values of richness and alpha diversity of phytoplankton were found in the two tributary rivers, which also produced an increase in the corresponding mean values in the Paraná River. Higher values of total abundance and lower values of evenness were found at the dam site with typical lentic conditions. The assemblages of the two tributary rivers were homogeneous. Bellow dam the phytoplankton exhibited a decrease in abundance and an increase in evenness. Water transparency, water flow, nutrients and turbidity were the main indicators of the system spatial heterogeneity. Several species were correlated with silicate, redox potential and/or water temperature. Reservoir conditions promote conspicuous differences in the phytoplankton of the Paraná River. The downstream reorganization of the community, with a sharp decrease in abundance, is positively influenced by tributary rivers in terms of richness and diversity.

Phytoplankton species composition, abundance, biodiversity indices and their influence by environmental conditions were examined in Thi Nai lagoon using data from four surveys in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2020. A total of 367 taxa of phytoplankton belonging to ten groups was recorded, of which diatoms were dominant with over 60% of the total species. In Thi Nai lagoon, the number of phytoplankton species decreased from the upper lagoon (283 taxa) to the lagoon mouth area (224) and was lowest in river stations (139). The species number was much lower in the rainy season (<95 species) and increased from 2004 to 2020. Among the biodiversity indices, Shannon, ∆, s∆+, Λ+ and sФ+ were lower in the rainy season, whereas ∆*, ∆+ and Ф+ had lower values in the dry season. For long-term analysis, the differences were especially significant at upper and lower lagoon for ∆, ∆*, ∆+, s∆+ and sФ+. In the dry season, the mean density of phytoplankton was lower at the river stations and upper lagoon, but higher at the lower lagoon and the lagoon mouth area. There was a clear difference of species assemblages between the two seasons with average dissimilarities in each area ranging from 94.16% to 95.57%. During 2004–2020, the difference in ratios between the main phytoplankton groups were small over years but there was a complete change in dominance of particular species, assemblage dissimilarities were from 73.4 to 77.9, greatest between 2009 and 2020. The lagoon was low in biodiversity for the whole investigated time indicated by taxonomic index ∆+. Among biodiversity indices, species richness (S), taxonomic indices (∆*, s∆+), and phylogenetic indices (Ф+, sФ+) were more sensitive to the changes of the aquatic environment than other traditional indices.
