This study was carried out to compare the regional fishing gears and catches of the gape net with wings used in Jeonnam, Korea.The total length of the gear used in Yeosu, Wando and Jindo was 107.0m, 64.0m, 52.8m, and the size of codend was 4.3mm.7.8mm. 9.8mm, respectively. The total number of bycatch species from anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) catches in Yeosu, Wando, and Jindo during the survey period were 21, 13, and 13 species. A total of individuals of anchovy accounted for over 90% out of total catches in all survey areas. The proportion of anchovy individuals was constantly high up to October in Yeosu, but it showed a sharp reduction to 18% in October in Wando with the increase of the individuals of Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis) and Big eyed herring (Sardinella zunasi). In Jindo, individuals of anchovy occupied over 99.8% out of total catches up to August. Since August, the number of individuals of Big eyed herring (Sardinella zunasi), Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), and Slimy (Leiognathus nuchalis) has increased while the number of anchovy individuals were decreased.

To investigate species composition and seasonal variation of demersal organisms in the coastal waters off the Taean peninsula, otter trawl surveys were conducted from April 2010 to January 2011. A total of 75 species were collected, including 44 species of Pisces, 19 species of Crustacea, 6 species of Cephalopoda, 4 species of Gastropoda, and 1 species each of Bivalvia and Echinoidea. The dominant species in each season were Palaemon gravieri in spring, Charybdis bimaculata in summer, Loligo japonica in autumn, and Crangon hakodatei in winter. The number of species, individuals and biomass were highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The diversity index was highest in summer and lowest in winter. The dominance index was highest in winter and lowest in summer. The richness index was highest in autumn and lowest in winter. The evenness index was highest in summer and lowest in autumn. A cluster analysis showed that demersal organisms were divided into two groups; spring and winter organisms (Group 1) and summer and autumn organisms (Group 2). We detected a significant difference (P<0.05) between these groups, mainly owing to Platycephalus indicus, Repomucenus koreanus, and Paralichthys olivaceus within Pisces: Trachysalambria curvirostris, Metapenaeopsis dalei, P. gravieri, and C. hakodatei within Crustacea: and L. japonica within Cephalopoda.

A Study on a Bycatch of the Gape Net in Jindo Area of Jeollanam-do

In order to survey the conditions of bycatch and discards for a gape net, a series of filed surveys was carried out total 10 surveys on two gape nets operated in the coastal area of Jindo during July to November 2008. The all catches in each survey were measured the body length, weight after sorted species. The analysis of catch data was conducted to separate 'first operation' and 'general operation'. In this study, the first operation defined as hauling the fishing gears that soaked over 10 hours because of setting on the previous day. The general operation means the haul of fishing gears conducted at intervals of one of or two hours after first operation. The bycatch in this study is defined as the other species except for anchovy, and bycatch rate refers to the proportion of bycatch to total catch. From the survey results, the average bycatch rates on first operations were 50% and 51% for Masa-ri and Supum-ri areas in Jindo, respectively. Also, the average bycatch rates on general operation were 2% and 3% for Masa-ri and Supum-ri areas in Jindo, respectively. The proportion of anchovy to total catch caught represented 75.5%. It needs the research on the selective fishing technology to reduce the bycatch on the gape net fishery.
