Seasonal variation and natural infection of Lutzomyia antunesi (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae), an endemic species in the Orinoquia region of Colombia

Abstract: Lutzomyia antunesi has been commonly reported in outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Orinoquia region of Colombia. The bionomics of this species were studied in the municipality of Villavicencio (Meta, Colombia). Sandflies were captured over the course of one week per month for one year in intradomiciliary, peridomiciliary and extradomiciliary housing areas. The captures were performed from 06:00 pm-06:00 am using CDC light traps and the females were processed for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) t… Show more

“…Our study includes only presence data so we are not able to make predictions on suspected vectors involved in transmission foci since local abundances must be assessed, however, it is known that the most abundant species is usually acting as the main vector in transmission foci [ 6 , 12 , 33 ].…”

“…The current situation of leishmaniases transmission in Colombia has not only shown an increase in the number of cases, but also an important variation in comparison to previous eco-epidemiological patterns in transmission cycles: insect vector species have shown an increase in their spatial distribution and habitat ranges, being collected close to human settlements, and new vector-parasite associations have been detected [ 6 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Transmission cycles are occurring in their original sylvatic ecosystems but also peri-urban (e.g.…”

“…Among the medically important species, L. antunesi has been associated with the transmission of ACL and VL in Colombia and Brazil (35) (36) . This species is prevalent in the Northern region of Brazil (37) (38) , as well as in the Northern region of MT (39) , where it was found naturally infected with Leishmania infantum (14) .…”
