Seasonal Variation and Analgesic Properties of Different Parts from Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe (Zingiberaceae) Grown in Brazil

Abstract: This work describes the seasonal variation of curcumenol (1) and dihydrocurdione (2), two active terpenoids from different parts (roots, mother rhizome and rugous rhizome) of Curcuma zedoaria grown in Brazil. The analysis was carried out by high resolution gas chromatography, using external standards for determination. The results showed that both terpenoids are present in all the parts studied. However, C. zedoaria exhibited about three times more terpenoids in the mother rhizome in autumn than in other parts… Show more

“…L. sibiricus displays analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities (Islam et al, 2005), moderate cytotoxic activity against leukemia cells (Satoh et al, 2003), and inhibits uterine adenomyosis (Nagasawa et al, 1990). C. zedoaria has been reported to act as an analgesics and an anti-inflammatory agent (Yoshioka, 1998;Pamplona et al, 2006). In addition to the effect on cell proliferation after traditional medicine treatment, cell morphological changes were also presently observed coincident with the application of treatment ingredients, indicating the positive effect of treatment on normal myometrium and leiomyoma.…”

“…For example, curcumenol and dihydrocurdione concentrations were four-to-five-times higher in Spring than in Autumn in the rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria (Pamplona et al, 2006). Likewise, the concentrations of flavonoids such as hypericin and pseudohyperisin varied in H. perforatum over different seasons (Southwell and Bourke, 2001).…”

“…The rhizome of C. zedoaria Rosc. has been reported to have antimicrobial [24] , antinociceptive [25] , hepatoprotective [26] and antioxidant [2] activities. The present study was undertaken to investigate the cytotoxic effect of Z. zerumbet (L) Smith.…”
