Seasonal variance in the chemical composition of essential oils from Lantana camaraaccessions and their trypanocidal activity on Phytomonas serpens

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the seasonal variance of the content and chemical composition of the essential oil from Lantana camaraaccessions at two harvest times, and to analyze the trypanocidal activity on Phytomonas serpens. Essential oil content ranged from 0.13 to 0.29% in the rainy season and from 0.13 to 0.33% in the dryseason. The compounds E-caryophyllene, α-humulene, α-curcumene and germacrene D defined the formation of four chemical clusters in the rainy a… Show more

“…EOs from Varronia curassavica genotypes have antiprotozoal activity against Phytomonas serpens causing alterations in the permeabilization of the cytoplasmic membrane [ 33 ]. Lantana camara EOs, extracted at different harvesting times, displayed trypanocidal activity on P. serpens [ 34 ], and EOs from Hyssopus officinalis showed antiprotozoal activity on T. cruzi and P. davidi [ 35 ]. However, this is the first report on the phytomonacidal effects of the EOs studied here.…”

“…The anti- P. serpens activity of natural products such as Varroniacuras savica and Lantana camara essential oils, as well as alkaloids including tomatine and tomatidine, have been reported [ 9 , 11 , 13 ]. Chalcones have been considered promising molecules due to their broad range of biological activities, multi-target action, simple chemistry and low toxicity [ 31 ].…”

“…Exploring natural products has been a good strategy to search for new candidates for the development of new drugs against protozoa, including trypanosomatids. The literature points out a wide variety of essential oils [ 8 , 9 ], plant extracts [ 10 , 11 ], and isolated compounds [ 12 , 13 , 14 ] that show anti-trypanosomatids activity. Among the main classes of active natural products are alkaloids, quinones, terpenes and phenolic compounds [ 15 ].…”
