“…was noticed in November 2014 (1.85 × 10 5 cells/l) (Figure 4), with diatoms abundance also the highest in November. These results were similar with the data noted by Drakulović et al (2012) and Bosak et al (2012) for the Boka Kotorska Bay, Totti et al (2000) for the middle Adriatic.…”

“…Similar was noticed in the eastern Adriatic by Bužančić, Ninčević-Gladan, Marasović, Kušpilić and Grebec (2016). In the middle Adriatic, on the western coastal area, Totti et al (2000) noticed maximal value of diatoms due to the growth of diatoms species Pseudo-nitzschia spp., and also the similar finding is for southern Adriatic Sea (Caroppo, Congestri, Bracchini, & Albertano, 2005). In this study, maximal abundance of diatoms was in autumn, which is different when compared to previous researches by Drakulović et al (2012) when the highest value was recorded in late winter -early spring.…”

“…Although we cannot rule out the contribution of advected detrital alkenones (Sicre et al, 2005;Rühlemann and Butzin, 2006), this anomaly most probably reflects a shift in the alkenone production. Today, in the western Mediterranean Sea and Adriatic Sea blooms of E. huxleyi occur in spring and fall (Ternois et al, 1996;Sicre et al, 1999;Totti et al, 2000). However, a recent comparison of proxy and instrumental 20th century time series in the North Atlantic has shown that environmental factors can alter alkenone production pattern at interannual to decadal timescale (Sicre et al, 2011).…”

“…In Pernambuco, the distribution of plankton is regulated mainly by eutrophication, river discharges, hydrology, tidal stage, precipitation and grazing (Paranaguá, 1985/86, NeumannLeitão et al, 1991/93 and Eskinazi et al, 1997. Some research done in other coastal zones have identified the role of wind effects (Gómez-Erache et al, 2000), tidal influence (Villate, 1997), atmospheric pressure, current speed and direction, water temperature (Licandro and Ibanez, 2000) and seasonal changes (Khalil and El-Rahman, 1997;Villa et al, 1997 andTotti et al, 2000) to control the distribution and composition of plankton communities. In the study area, the observed distribution pattern was mainly conditioned by precipitation and evaporation rates, nutrient concentrations, temperature, salinity and tidal stage patterns.…”
