Seasonal Variability and Future Projection of Ocean Acidification on the East China Sea Shelf off the Changjiang Estuary

Abstract: Ocean acidification (OA) occurs universally in the world’s oceans. Marginal seas are facing more serious OA than the open ocean due to strong anthropogenic and natural impacts. This study investigates carbonate dynamics on the East China Sea (ECS) shelf off the Changjiang Estuary using field observations made from 2015 to 2019 that cover all four seasons. In the low productivity cold seasons, the water was well-mixed vertically. The coastal area and the northern ECS were occupied by water characterized by high… Show more

“…Hence, a coupling between carbonate saturation state in the estuarine water and the process of organic matter degradation is inferred. Similar coupled behavior has been reported in several other estuaries (Abril et al 2003;Guo et al 2021). Increase in pH towards the mouth of the estuary is due to the buffering effect of seawater, which causes higher SI in the water.…”

“…The Yangtze River basin is characterized by rapid economic development and high population density. Due to the intensive human activities, significant amount of reactive N has been discharged into the Yangtze Estuary and adjacent coastal area, leading to serious N pollution and rapid water acidification 65 . Therefore, the Yangtze Estuary was selected as the study area to investigate the responses of nitrification rate and associated N 2 O emission to aquatic acidification.…”

“…In this study, near-bottom waters, which typically exhibit more active nitrification and more severe acidification 65,66 , were collected from these sites during the March cruise of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2020, using Niskin-X bottles mounted on a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiler (Sea-Bird 911 plus) (Fig. 1).…”

“…Climate change also affects the coastal oxygen environment by increasing the temperature of coastal water, thus decreasing oxygen solubility. Changes in rainfall modulate estuarine circulation in coastal areas, significantly affecting ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles (Guo et al, 2021;Hoshiba et al, 2021). Climate change also modulates basin-scale water circulation, thereby changing the patterns and strengths of seasonal intrusions of open-ocean waters into coastal areas (Koslow et al, 2011(Koslow et al, , 2015Booth et al, 2012).…”
