Seasonal study on soil salinity and its relation to other properties at Satkhira district in Bangladesh

Abstract: The study was conducted at Shyamnagar and Talaupazila of Satkhira district in Bangladesh to know about the soil salinity and its relation to other properties of soil in both dry and wet season and comparison the present status of soil between two upazilas. Electrical Conductivity (EC) value of the study area showed that yield of many crops can be restricted in dry season due to salinity. Mean EC was slightly saline (5.93 dsm-1) in dry season and non- saline (0.61 dsm-1) in wet season. Ranges of pH were slightl… Show more

“…Moreover, agricultural soils are more likely to be exposed to salt deposition due to its more susceptibility to inundation and thus could show slightly high EC values. In another study, Kumar et al. (2019) reported a dry-season soil salinity range between 3.92-7.69 mS cm −1 in Shyamnagar soils.…”

“…High salinity can be found in Shayamnagar, Debhata and Assasuni upazila 27 . In the dry season, P1 pH ranged from 6.5 to 7.5, whereas P2 pH ranged from 6.2 to neutral (7.2) in these areas which is quite alarming 77 . Morshed et al 26 have recommended to do only cultivate shrimp as the upazilas contain high level of salinity and not appropriate for other crops.…”

“…The magnitude of EC is decreasing with the fining nature of the sediments in the downstream direction (Saha et al 2017). The mean EC value of the sediments was 1.16 ds/m that indicates very low or negligible effects of salinity of the sediments of the Rangpur division (SRDI 2010; Kumar et al 2019).…”
