Seasonal provenance changes in present-day Saharan dust collected in and off Mauritania

Abstract: Abstract. Saharan dust has a crucial influence on the earth climate system and its emission, transport and deposition are intimately related to, e.g., wind speed, precipitation, temperature and vegetation cover. The alteration in the physical and chemical properties of Saharan dust due to environmental changes is often used to reconstruct the climate of the past. However, to better interpret possible climate changes the dust source regions need to be known. By analysing the mineralogical composition of transpo… Show more

“…Such in situ-based climatologies of dust deposition are generally scarce and limited in temporal and spatial coverage. In this study, we compile a data set (see Table S1 in the supporting information for details) by taking from a widely used precompiled data set ; and references therein) complemented by some recent 10.1029/2019JD030574 Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres observations in the studied region (Friese et al, 2017;Korte et al, 2017). See Table S1 in for details.…”

“…The nutrient concentration of the upwelled waters off Mauritania varies depending on its origin (Fütterer, 1983;Mittelstaedt, 1991;Zenk et al, 1991). The sources of upwelling waters off Mauritania are either North Atlantic Central Water (NACW), north of about 23 • N, or SACW (south of 21 • N, Fig.…”

“…Another, but less common, approach is to use singleparticle mass spectrometry (SPMS) to provide an online assessment of aerosol composition. An advantage of this technique is that the high temporal resolution allows the evolution of the particle composition to be measured in a dynamic setting (Cziczo et al, 2006;Zelenyuk et al, 2009;Gaston et al, 2013), and the instruments can be deployed in line with other techniques such as counterflow virtual impactor (CVI) to measure ice residuals (Cziczo et al, 2003;Gallavardin et al, 2008;Baustian et al, 2012;Zelenyuk et al, 2015;Worringen et al, 2015;Schmidt et al, 2017). However, compositional analysis with SPMS is fraught with difficulties relating to poor reproducibility and the non-quantitative nature of the measurement associated with instrument function and parti-N.
