Seasonal patterns of Asthma medication fills among diverse populations of the United States

Abstract: A seasonal pattern of asthma medication fill rates likely represents a reactive response to a loss of disease control and increased symptoms. Adherence to and consistent use of asthma medications among individuals who use medications in reaction to seasonal exacerbations might be a key component in reducing the risk of asthma exacerbations.

“…Such seasonal patterns have also been demonstrated by Turi et al for asthma medication deliveries. This pattern of more deliveries of asthma medications, including ICS, between November and May, corresponded to seasonal exacerbations of asthma [ 62 ]. As mentioned above, ICS can also be used to treat other diseases than asthma, such as acute bronchitis or upper-respiratory-tract conditions, that also have a seasonal frequency [ 24 ].…”

“…47 Treatment adherence correlates with the periods in which symptoms and asthma exacerbation frequency is highest. 48 Refills for asthma controller prescriptions are highest throughout the winter months, and lower in summer when asthma control is highest. 48 This pattern may contribute to the frequency or severity of severe asthma attacks in the autumn.…”

“…48 Refills for asthma controller prescriptions are highest throughout the winter months, and lower in summer when asthma control is highest. 48 This pattern may contribute to the frequency or severity of severe asthma attacks in the autumn. Thus, the unique nature of inhaled treatment, the requirement for accurate inhalation technique, coupled with seasonal distribution of asthma symptoms and exacerbations may contribute to a significant portion of poor treatment adherence.…”
