Abstract:The Coleoptera fauna of forensic importance associated with Sus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758 carcass decomposition in Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Brazil, was determined. A total of 41 species, belonging to six families and 11 subfamilies were collected. Staphylinidae presented the higher richness with 17 species sampled, followed by Histeridae, with 11 and Scarabaeidae with nine species. Euspilotus azureus (Sahlberg, 1823) (Histeridae), Aleochara sp. (Staphylinidae) and Oxelytrum cayennense (Stürm, 1826) (Silphidae) occurred in all stages of decomposition. Omalodes lucidus Erichson, 1824 and Scapomegas auritus Marseul, 1855 (Histeridae) are recorded for the first time in the Amazon, being also reported for the first time associated with a decomposing carcass. The fauna differs from those of other Brazilian regions, emphasizing the importance of studies to determine the regional insect fauna of forensic importance that can be used in criminal investigations.

ABSTRACT. The blowfly species are important components in necrophagous communities of the Neotropics. Besides being involved in the degradation of animal organic matter, they may serve as vectors for pathogens and parasites, and also cause primary and secondary myiasis. The occurrence pattern of these species is well defined, yet it is still not very clear which of these environmental factors determine the structure of the assemblies. This paper was developed to evaluate the influence of mean temperature and relative humidity variation in the abundance and richness of blowflies in the Brazilian southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul, where temperature variation is well marked throughout the year. To evaluate this objective, WOT (Wind Oriented Trap) were installed with beef liver as bait in three environments for 10 consecutive days in each month between July 2003 and June 2004. A total of 13,860 flies were collected distributed among 16 species with a higher frequency of Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann, 1819) and Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819). The mean temperature and relative humidity influence the richness of blowflies, with greater richness and abundance in late spring and early summer, whereas abundance was only influenced by temperature. Each species responded differently with respect to these variables, where L. eximia is not influenced by any of the two abiotic factors, despite the high abundance presented. This paper presents the results of the sensitivity for the presence or absence of species of Calliphoridae and on the variation of the abundance of these species under regime temperature changes and relative humidity with implications for public health and animal management. As espécies de Calliphoridae são importantes componentes das comunidades de necrófagos na Região Neotropical. Além de estarem envolvidas na degradação da matéria orgânica animal podem também veicular diversos patógenos e parasitos, bem como causar míiases primária e secundária. O padrão de ocorrência destas espécies está bem definido, mas ainda não se tem muito claramente quais fatores ambientais determinam a estrutura destas assembleias. Desenvolvemos este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar a influência da temperatura média e umidade relativa do ar na variação da abundância e riqueza de espécies de califorídeos no sul do Rio Grande do Sul, onde a variação da temperatura é bem demarcada ao longo do ano. Carcaças de vertebrados são exemplos marcantes de recursos efêmeros e pontuais (Hanski 1986), sendo colonizadas por diferentes espécies de animais, dentre as quais se destacam os insetos, principalmente das ordens Diptera e Coleoptera. O estudo da sucessão dessas espécies, bem como o tempo em que vivem na carcaça, pode servir para determinar em quais circunstâncias a morte ocorreu e ainda estimar o intervalo post mortem (IPM) (Keh 1985;Catts & Goff 1992) dentro do escopo da Entomologia Forense.A utilização de insetos em estimativas de IPM tem se baseado principalmente por estes serem as primeiras espécies de animais a encontrar um cadáver, utilizando-o como fonte protéica, sítio de cópula e estímulo a oviposição. Uma outra característica importante é de que, como em qualquer comunidade recém-formada, haverá colonização do ambiente por tantas espécies quanto o recurso permitir, desencadeando um processo de sucessão heterotrófica que, se constante, pode ser altamente informativo (Catts & Goff 1992 ABSTRACT. A study of the Coleoptera (Insecta) fauna that inhabits Sus scrofa L. carcass in Curitiba, Paraná. This paper sought to assess the Coleoptera fauna associated with carcasses of Sus scrofa L., 1758, which is usually used as model in Forensic Entomology. The addition and sequential substitution of insect species could be used to estimate the post mortem interval (PMI). The present study took place in Centro Politécnico (UFPR), between september 2005 to september 2006. A pig weighting 15 kg was sacrificed each season and put inside a cage. Sampling is made daily in a tray placed below the carcass and in a Shannon modified trap, and each 14 days in five pit-fall traps. 4,360 beetles were collected, belonging to 112 species of 26 families, 12 were considered of forensic potential. The active collecting made in the tray was responsible for the largest number of beetles (2,023 specimens), followed by the modified Shannon trap (2,016 specimens) and by the pit-fall traps (324 specimens). Staphylinidae was more abundant in the modified Shannon trap, while Silphidae was more abundant in pit-fall traps. The main habits found are predator/parasite (55%) and omnivorous (38,05%), with only a few species considered necrophagous (1,31%).
