Seasonal odor impact range of selected wastewater treatment plants – modeling studies using Polish reference model

Abstract: On-site odor measurements and mathematical modeling are useful for identifying the odor impact at the source and receptors located in areas adjacent to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Impact of open area sources can be significant and may influence air quality both at the WWTP area and downwind in the surrounding areas. In this work, results of the odor measurements carried out in the spring and summer season for sources within three different mechanical-biological WWTPs in Poland are presented. The odor … Show more

“…Fragrance compounds may cause deterioration of quality of life, causing symptoms associated with long-term exposure, including headaches, nausea, concentration problems, loss of appetite, stress, insomnia, and discomfort, which indirectly translates into a desire to stay at a given location [32]. Compared with other forms of air pollution, exposure to odor resulting from human activities is generally considered a nuisance rather than a threat to public health or the environment, as opposed to noise pollution, the measurement, regulation, and effects of which on human health are well known [25,[48][49][50][51].…”

“…The odorous compounds can have an influence on the deterioration of life quality, causing symptoms associated with long-term exposure, including headaches, nausea, problems with concentration, a loss of appetite, stress, insomnia, and discomfort [3]. Taking into account the unit processes in wastewater treatment plants, it was found that the operations connected with sludge processing constituted the main source of odorous substance emissions [4,5]. Stuetz and Frechen, based on investigations in wastewater treatment plants in Germany and France, revealed that the operations connected with sludge thickening, dewatering, and processing contributed to ca.…”

“…Because of , among others, the complicated nature of perception of a smell and its assessment, the regulations related to odor nuisance in the European Union and throughout the world are solved on a national or a regional level. Mandatory regulations define following elements in various ways: criteria and acceptable values, including, in the scope of: concentration of the odor (expressed in ouE/m 3 ), reference methods and models and also techniques of control and prevention of odor nuisances [6][7][8], and the considerations dedicated to odors, covered odor-creating features of gases cover among others: concentration, intensity, character, offensiveness, persistency (CICOP), frequency, intensity, duration, offensiveness and location (so called FIDOL) and hedonic tone [6, 8 -10].…”
