Seasonal occurrence of silica-scaled chrysophytes under eutrophic conditions

Abstract: The seasonal occurrence of silica-scaled chrysophytes (Paraphysomonadaceae and Mallomonadaceae) in the eutrophic lake Tystrup So, was examined during 1979-81 in relation to temperature and to overall phytoplankton biomass and composition. The 33 species recorded represent three seasonality types, with occurrence in spring alone, spring and autumn, and during a greater or lesser part of the whole year, including summer. The great majority of the species have their main occurrence in early spring and at low temp… Show more

“…The lorica has a long delicate stipe that is attached to the substratum (usually a filamentous alga). We suggest that the few reports of Syncrypta from North America should probably be referred to Synuropsis because the original description of the type species of Syncrypta (S. volvox Ehrenberg) was very likely Synura sphagnicola Korshikov (Kristiansen, 1988). The flagellate form may be indicative of zoospore formation.…”

“…However, chrysophytes studies (vegetative or cysts) from sediment traps spanning a year or longer are scarce (Kamenik and Schmidt, 2005), or limited to one lake (Kristiansen, 1988;Siver and Hamer, 1992;Agbeti and Smol, 1995;Kamenik et al, 2001;Pla-Rabes and Catalan, 2011). Siver and Hamer (1992) studied a three year period of sediment trap chrysophyte assemblages in a small lake in New England in order to study their response to seasonal climate and environmental gradients.…”
