Seasonal Movements of Juvenile and Adult herring,Clupea harengusL., Tagged Along the Maine Coast

Abstract: Cohort analysis of the numbers by age-group of Atlantic cod caught off southern Labrador and eastern Newfoundland during 1961-80 were used, together with certain assumptions on inshore migration of cod and the seasonal nature of the offshore and inshore fisheries, to estimate rates of inshore exploitation of the stock during 1961-76. The results indicated that during 1961-74 only a small proportion (about 5%) of the cod, which survived the offshore fishery each year, were actually caught in the inshore fishery… Show more

“…Herring tagging studies were first conducted by the Maine Department of Marine Resources (D.M.R.) between 1976-78 when 57,887 age 2+ herring were tagged and released at 34 sites along the Maine coast (Creaser et al, 1984). These studies were continued between 1980-82, when an additional 106,241 age 2+ herring were tagged and released at 38 sites along the Maine and New Hampshire coasts.…”

“…The age structure was narrower in the Georges Bank region (predominately ages 3-5) than in the Gulf of Maine where a greater proportion of immature (age 1 and 2) herring were captured in midwater trawls and a greater proportion of older herring were captured in bottom trawls. Juvenile herring tend to shallower water and/or more inshore areas than do adults (Creaser et al, 1984;Creaser and Libby, 1988), so Georges Bank juveniles may not reappear on Georges Bank until they mature. At the opposite end of the age spectrum, there appears to be fewer age 6 + herring in the Georges Bank region and why this is or should be so is not readily apparent from these data.…”
