Seasonal increases in fish trophic niche plasticity within a flood‐pulse river ecosystem (Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia)

Abstract: Abstract. Species' responses to seasonal environmental variation can influence trophic interactions and food web structure within an ecosystem. However, our ability to predict how species' interactions will vary spatially and temporally in response to seasonal variation unfortunately remains inadequate within most ecosystems. Fish assemblages in the Tonle Sap Lake (TSL) of Cambodia-a dynamic flood-pulse ecosystem -were studied for five years (2010-2014) using stable isotope and Bayesian statistical approaches … Show more

“…Lastly, similar patterns were observed in a flood‐pulse ecosystem whereby the niche widths and isotopic values of different species of fish expanded/contracted and shifted within δ‐space during the wet (when floodplain habitat was inundated thereby increasing the range of feeding habitats and or diversity in available food resources) vs. the dry season, respectively (Pool et al. ).…”

“…In this study, we investigate how the TSL fish assemblage composition varies across floodplain mesohabitats and seasons. Despite advances in our understanding of TSL hydro‐ecological processes, including trophic interactions (Pool et al., ), flood pulse dynamics (Arias et al., ), and energy transfer (Costa‐Cabral et al., ; Holtgrieve et al., ) at the whole system scale, interactions among the lake's hydrology, floodplain mesohabitats and food web structure remain largely unexplored. Thus, we investigate fishes’ taxonomic patterns within the TSL and identify how their life‐history characteristics underpin those patterns within the complex floodplain environment.…”

“…At a community level, diet diversity within and among species is widely considered important for dampening competition and promoting coexistence of fishes in tropical floodplains (Winemiller and Pianka , Pool et al. , Costa‐Pereira et al. ).…”
