Seasonal Histological Changes in Gonads of the Catfish (CLARIAS LAZERA)

Abstract: Forty mature catfish of both sexes (n=10 per season; 5 males and 5 females) were used to study the effect of different seasons on the histological and histochemical structure of the gonads. The histological results showed that both testes and ovaries of the catfish were degenerated during winter that was considered as a resting season of the catfish gonadal activity. Both testes and ovaries began to restore their intact and fully mature structure during spring and continue the same during summer where the test… Show more

“…In addition, the vitellogenic oocytes predominate mainly in the spawning season. These observations are in agreement with those found in Schilbe mystus (El-Dawi, 1990) and in Clarias lazera (Emam and Abughrien, 2014).…”

“…During the early and late post-spawning seasons, the tunica albuginea is thick and becomes thin in the pre-spawning season and very thinner in the spawning season. These observations are in accordance with those of Emam and Abughrien (2014) in Clarias lazera, who also stated that the thin tunica albuginea of the ovary in spawning season is due to pressure exerted on it by the enlarged mature oocytes.…”

“…African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) has a great commercial importance because it is considered as one of the healthiest and cheapest fish as a source of protein and sufficient omega fatty acids (Ebrahimi and Taherianfard, 2011). Generally, fish is not only used for human consumption, but also used as a good source of animal meal (Emam and Badia, 2014). Consumption of fish from Lake Mariout is considered a health problem.…”

“…The atretic follicles were present throughout the year, but they were increasing during autumn (spent ovaries) and winter (resting ovaries); and these atretic follicles determined the spawned individuals (Emam and Badia, (2014). The pre-vitellogenic follicles found all over the year, but in autumn were abundant as the spent ovaries and in winter as the resting ovary and less common during spring and summer (spawning seasons) (Emam and Badia., 2014). In this study, atresia may be due to environmental stress (Mehta et al, 2015).…”
