Seasonal Flight Activity and Distribution of Metallic Woodboring Beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) Collected in North Carolina and Tennessee

Abstract: Distribution records and seasonal flight activity information for metallic woodboring beetle (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) species have not been compiled for North Carolina and Tennessee. Institutional, research, and private collections in North Carolina and Tennessee were reviewed to provide seasonal activity data of 5 subfamilies of buprestid beetle species. Label information was checked for 15,217 specimens of 135 species collected between 1901 and 2013 (North Carolina) and between 1934 and 2013 (Tennessee). Th… Show more

“…The height of both cover crops was > 30 cm starting in May and gradually increased to 70+ cm at the end of June. The May to June period coincided with the active FHAB flight period of May to July and was sufficient to block FHAB oviposition based on our results. A study conducted simultaneously with this one attempted to use tree wraps to block FHAB attack .…”

“…Therefore, clover supplies sufficient nitrogen to the field without the need to add more fertilizer to the wheat cover. Adult FHAB are predominantly active from mid‐May to early July, so the maximum height of wheat and clover in the late spring coincides with the likely oviposition period of FHAB. Therefore, it is predicted that that crimson clover and wheat would be at the ideal height to interfere with FHAB movement and oviposition around the tree trunk.…”

“…In our 2016 trapping effort, a total of 69 A. macer specimens were collected over the 16-week sampling period, with 40 and 29 being captured in the intercept and Lindgren funnel traps, respectively. The first specimen was not captured until June, and the largest number of specimens was collected between 15 and 28 June, which is a common activity time for other Agrilus species in the southeastern USA (Burke 1917;Klingeman et al 2015;Nord et al 1965). A single specimen was collected during our last sample period, 23 August to 9 September (Fig.…”

“…Regardless, since Jamerson's project, considerable monitoring efforts for woodboring beetles have been undertaken across portions of Tennessee. Although recent efforts have been focused on metallic woodboring beetles, bark beetles, and other species of economic interest (Oliver & Mannion 2001;Oliver et al 2002Oliver et al , 2004Hansen et al 2012Hansen et al , 2015Klingeman et al 2015), extended-season trapping in the region has yielded many longhorned beetle specimens.…”
