Seasonal Evolution of Size-Segregated Particulate Mercury in the Atmospheric Aerosol Over Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica

Abstract: Size-fractionated particulate mercury (PHg) measurements were performed from November 2017 to January 2018 at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica) for the first time. Samples were collected every 10 days by a six-stage high-volume cascade impactor with size classes between 10 μm and 0.49 μm. Total PHg concentrations were maxima (87 ± 8 pg m−3) in November, then decreased to values ~40% lower and remained almost constant until the end of the sampling period (~30 pg m−3). The trimodal aerosol mass distribution reveals th… Show more

“…More recently, Antarctica applications have also been reported both for coastal and inland sites, including the plateau areas and Dome C in particular. A non-exhaustive selection includes papers referring to: (i) coastal sites of Queen Maud Land (Neumayer Stn), Victoria Land (Mario Zucchelli Stn), Antarctic Peninsula (King Sejong Stn, Larsen C Ice Shelf, Gabriel De Castilla Stn), and Southern Ocean (Pacific Sector); (ii) inland sites (Gawn Ice Piedmont, David Glacier, ITASE GV5 point); and (iii) plateau sites (Mid Point, Dome C, Law Dome, Talos Dome, Taylor Dome) [ 41 , 107 , 108 , 109 , 110 , 111 , 112 , 113 , 114 , 115 , 116 , 117 , 118 ].…”

“…In Table 4, all such scientific studies have been compiled that were published between 2019 and 2021. As can be seen in the table, intensive fieldwork at different Antarctic locations has been conducted which covers a wide scope of topics within the area of atmospheric aerosols, including the production of marine aerosols and bioaerosols [155][156][157], the interaction between aerosols and clouds [35,158,159], and the monitoring of tracing and heavy metals in the Antarctic atmosphere [92,130,160].…”

“…Sample treatments, analyses and decontamination procedures were carried out in clean room laboratories with areas in Class 5 (ISO 14644-1) under laminar flow, both in the Antarctica and in Italy [15]. The used filtration system was the Sulfoflo from Nalgene (Rochester, NY, USA), equipped with 0.45 µm-pore size membrane filters (cellulose mixed esters ∅ 47 mm, Schleicher & Schuell, Dassel, Germany).…”
