Seasonal Entropy, Diversity and Inequality Measures of Submitted and Accepted Papers Distributions in Peer-Reviewed Journals

Abstract: This paper presents a novel method for finding features in the analysis of variable distributions stemming from time series. We apply the methodology to the case of submitted and accepted papers in peer-reviewed journals. We provide a comparative study of editorial decisions for papers submitted to two peer-reviewed journals: the Journal of the Serbian Chemical Society (JSCS) and this MDPI Entropy journal. We cover three recent years for which the fate of submitted papers, about 600 papers to JSCS and 2500 to … Show more

“…To measure the effectiveness of each time interval in capturing seasonal data, the primary method employed is entropy analysis. This analytical approach aims to discern which intervals best reflect significant changes in AHU induction motor frequency, providing the most accurate and useful data for predictive analysis [28]. Entropy, in this context, is a measure derived from information theory that quantifies the uncertainty or unpredictability of a data set.…”

“…JRT is based on the actual data provided inside the published articles, and thus cannot track the data about rejected articles. Yet, many works have studied rejected articles too, and an interesting finding has been the journal-dependent 'seasonal effect' [2] of the peer review process. In the following, we discuss the overall framework and the challenges faced on instantiating the functional components.…”

“…The Theil index measures the inequality and difference according to the concepts of information quantity and entropy (Ausloos et al, 2019). It decomposes the overall difference into within sub-region difference and between sub-region difference, and has wide applications in the decomposition and analysis of difference and inequality.…”
