Seasonal effect on fatigue, pain and dryness in primary Sjögren’s syndrome

Abstract: Background: To assess the presence of a seasonal effect on fatigue, pain and dryness in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Methods: Data (date; visual analogue scales (VAS) for pain, fatigue and dryness) were extracted from three randomised placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating infliximab (TRIPSS; n = 103 patients), hydroxychloroquine (JOQUER; n = 120 patients) and rituximab (TEARS; n = 120 patients) and from the 5-year follow-up of the ASSESS prospective cohort (n = 395 patients). Data were analysed at e… Show more

“…Dry eye worsened mainly in summer and winter in European patients, and the seasonal peak of complaints appeared to be mostly related to temperature and humidity (99). In contrast, another study showed that seasonality does not affect patient-reported outcomes on fatigue, pain and global dryness (100).…”

“…pSS exhibits a lower prevalence in males and primarily affects elderly females. [14,25] Salivary glands represent the primary target organs of pSS, thereby effectively reflecting the potential autoimmune exocrine glandular lesions associated with this condition. Salivary gland ultrasonography plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis and assessment of pSS, providing essential information for understanding salivary gland lesions.…”

“…Studies have shown that cytokines and other markers of inflammation are associated with fatigue in pSS [ 282 , 285 ]. Part of middle-aged women diagnosed with pSS may present a clinical triad characterized by dryness, pain, and fatigue [ 286 ]. Fatigue in pSS tends to persist over time, and regular physical exercise may prove beneficial [ 287 ].…”
