Seasonal dynamics of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Osijek (Croatia) for the period 1995–2004

Abstract: The ten year research (1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004) of adult mosquitoes in the area of Osijek by dry ice baited CDC traps has provided significant information on mosquito species, species prevalence, their dynamics and seasonal activity. A total of 207,136 adult mosquitoes comprising twenty species belonging to the following genera: Anopheles, Ochlerotatus, Aedes, Culex, Coquillettidia, Culiseta and Uranotaenia were collected. The seven most common species collected during this s… Show more

“…The population density of this species increased in July [46] and May to August [47], reaching its largest peak in August [46,47]. Culex pipiens showed an increase in population density from May to July in north-eastern Croatia, then sharp decline occurred toward the end of the season [48]. In northern Italy, the species had maximum activity peak in July [49], that is almost consistent with the results of the present study.…”

“…vexans , the abundance of which is dependent on flooding and thus can vary considerably at a given site [e.g. from 568 to more than 45 000 mosquitoes collected in a season in Croatia over 10 years (Bogojević et al ., )], may not be the initial drivers of an arbovirus amplification cycle. Nevertheless, both Cq.…”

“…However, the substantial challenges and resources required to collect datasets of sufficient duration to prove ecological processes in the field are substantial, as is clear from the lack of availability of high resolution multi-stage datasets currently available for vector species. Existing long-term studies only monitor single life stages at lower temporal resolutions, which means that complex seasonal dynamics can be missed and the underlying causes of these seasonal patterns are poorly understood [106, 107]. Consequently, we feel that collecting and analysing a dataset with such high temporal resolution across the life stages has provided valuable insights into the mosquito ecology and will provide useful guidelines and information to help shape further, more long-term studies.…”
