Seasonal Changes in the Content of Photosynthetic Pigments of Dominant Macrophytes in the Bardača Fishpond Area

Abstract: In this paper, changes in the content of photosynthetic pigments during the vegetation season in the leaves of Phragmites communis Trin., Salvinia natans (L.) All., Trapa natans L. and Utricularia vulgaris L. in the area of Bardača fishpond (Sinjak pond) were monitored. Physical and chemical characteristics of water are defined in order to determine their association with the content of photosynthetic pigments. The obtained results indicate the specificity in the content of photosynthetic pigments between aqua… Show more

“…Chlorophyll-a and -b increase at the beginning of the summer and in autumn can be explained by the availability of nutrients (Kitajima & Hogan, 2003 ; Wetzel, 2001 ). The maximum increase in chlorophyll-a in summer and autumn and the phosphorus levels, which were highest in autumn, represent nutrient sinks for inorganic nutrients (Pingree et al, 1977 ), and the sudden decrease in chlorophyll-c in summer could be due to stress from high temperatures (Maksimović et al 2020 ).…”

“…Photosynthetic pigments, especially chlorophylls, are indicators of photosynthetic activity, growth, development and yield of plants (Nikolić et al, 2009;Dar et al, 2013;Maksimović et al, 2020b). Changes in the concentration of photosynthetic pigments are important indicators of the physiological status of plants.…”

“…The Chl-a reflectance peak, referred to as the green peak (∼550 nm) was the primary contributor to spectral separability for most OTUs during the peak-growing season when plants invest in Chl-a production. Chl-a absorptance was comparatively unimportant later in the summer when Chl-a is less abundant due to increased shading (Maksimović et al, 2020) and plants redirect resources toward accessory pigments (Salisbury and Ross, 1992). This temporal variability in relative pigment abundance also explains the substantial increase in moderately to highly ranked features in the red and red edge regions (650-710 nm).…”
