“…Hediste diversicolor is a very important species in estuarine food webs and shows several feeding techniques: it has been described as a predator, scavenger, deposit‐ and suspension‐feeder (Muus, 1967; Frid & James, 1988; Esselink & Zwarts, 1989; Riisgard, 1991) and is an important prey species for crustaceans, fishes and birds (Heip & Herman, 1979; Davey & George, 1986; Evans, 1988; Zwarts & Wanink, 1993). Hediste diversicolor has a holobenthic cycle without pelagic larvae (Dales, 1950) and its dynamics have been intensively studied along Northern European coasts (Dales, 1951; Chambers & Milne, 1975; Heip & Herman, 1979; Mettam, 1979; Olive & Garwood, 1981; Möller, 1985; Gillet, 1990). Data about dynamics of several H. diversicolor populations in the Iberian Peninsula were available (Sola, 1994; Francés Zubillaga & Saiz Salinas, 1997; A. Dueso & R. Sardá, unpublished data), but only a few studies on secondary production have been carried out (Sprung, 1994; Arias & Drake, 1995).…”
