Seasonal Changes in Plasma Hormones, Sex-Related Genes Transcription in Brain, Liver and Ovary during Gonadal Development in Female Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the periodic seasonal changes in endocrine activity and gonadal development of female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a high-altitude cold-water environment. The fish were sampled monthly from January to November and the levels of plasma hormones (estradiol (E2), cortisol and thyroid hormones (THS)) and vitellogenin (VTG) were measured by ELISA. Moreover, the transcriptions of sex-related genes in the ovary, brain, and liver were detected by qRT-PCR. The resu… Show more

“…After 21 days of treatment with CAU, GSI significantly increased in both males and females (Figure 6a), while HSI was lower in females only (Figure 6b). This concurrent increase of GSI and the decrease of HSI in female fish might be due to the transcription of sex-related genes during gonadal development, as previously observed in female rainbow trout [38]. Indeed, HSI increases at an early stage of ovary maturation in various fish species, while it decreases at a late stage of ovary maturation [39].…”

“…In many fish species, the liver undergoes seasonal variations in size and in the content of fat and glycogen, and these changes depend on the fish gender and estrogen concentrations, as they can be abolished either by ovariectomy in females or by the administration of estrogen to mature males (Ishii and Yamamoto 1970 ). Recently, Chen and coworkers (Chen et al 2021 ) described season-related differences in the gene expression of estrogen receptors and vitellogenin in the liver of rainbow trout. Similar to our observation for carp, the constitutive expression of these genes in rainbow trout was higher in the course of autumn (October–November) than in the spring.…”

“…For example, in common carp higher concentrations of 17β-estradiol (E2) were usually observed in April and November, while their lowest concentrations occur in August (Saha et al 2002 ; Taghizadeh et al 2013 ). In turn, in rainbow trout, a higher level of E2 was reported in May and in September (Chen et al 2021 ). In addition, high E2 concentrations affect the level of vitellogenin, as well as the expression of estrogen receptors and aromatase (Nelson et al 2007 ; Nagler et al 2012 ; Ye et al 2022 ).…”
