Seasonal changes in activities of human neutrophils in vitro

Abstract: Objective and designWe present a retrospective analysis of previously collected blood samples to determine whether the immune response of neutrophils depends on the season i.e., short versus long days, in which blood samples were collected.MethodsThe bactericidal activity and adhesive capacity of neutrophils, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and CD11b/CD18 molecule expression level were investigated. The investigated neutrophils were divided into two groups based on the time of blood collection… Show more

“…Also, several rheumatologic disorders have a seasonal onset without a clear infectious trigger. Systemic vasculitis and Wegener’s granulomatosis typically present in the winter months, while giant cell arteritis varies by region 7,8,13. The timing of pathogen exposure to secondary autoimmune disease can be variable as well.…”

“…Systemic vasculitis and Wegener's granulomatosis typically present in the winter months, while giant cell arteritis varies by region. 7,8,13 The timing of pathogen exposure to secondary autoimmune disease can be variable as well. For HSV encephalitis, the delay to development of secondary NMDRe has been reported to be weeks, 4 whereas in Sydenham's chorea, the delay can be months.…”

“…Humans also show seasonal changes in immunity and in the occurrence of infectious diseases [ 47 ]. Changes in immunity include seasonal variation in cytokine production [ 60 ], bacterial killing activity [ 61 ] and response to vaccination [ 62 ]. The most comprehensive characterization so far of annual cycles in human immunity comes from a recent study by Dopico et al [ 3 ].…”

“…Though, the mechanisms underlying the seasonal trends of cancer recurrence detected in our study cannot be assessed, there are several possible factors (e.g., diet, physical exercise, smoke, alcohol, air pollution, infections, immunity and endocrine dyscrasia) that may associated with the seasonality of cancer recurrence. Firstly, the immune functional activity of neutrophils was increased in summer, which was associated with poor recurrence-free survival (24,25). Secondly, as our results suggested, in USA, UK, and Canada, the top ranking search cancer is breast cancer, so the seasonal variation that we found in cancer recurrence may be primarily due to breast cancer.…”
