The composition and the content of lipids, fatty acids and sterols during spawning (spring) in different tissues of herring Clupea harengus membras were compared with quantities of lipid compounds in abdomen muscle of brown shrimp Crangon crangon. The largest quantity of fatty acids in lipids (93.7%), was observed in fish muscle. The liver was characterized by a higher content and variety of sterols (about 4.6 times more than in fish muscle), and in fish sperm, additional fatty acids were identified and the highest amount of EPA and DHA (22% and 34% of fatty acids, respectively) was recorded. The brown shrimp, despite its small size, contained significantly more lipids than the Baltic herring per g of tissues. Fatty acids were at the same level (83% * Corresponding author: piotr. stepnowski@chem.ug.edu.pl of the total lipids in shrimp muscle and 93.7% in fish muscle), but the amount of sterols was significantly higher in the muscle of shrimp (5.50 ±0.31 mg g -1 , 17% of total sterols, n=10) than in fish muscle (1.33 ±0.04 mg g -1 , 6.3% of total lipids, n=6). And thus, shrimp is a good source of food for higher trophic levels, and in consequence -a good source of PUFAs for humans. With these results we prove that shrimp and herring play an important role in the supply of EFAs, which has great pharmaceutical and medical benefits.

Cocconeis scutellum is a benthic diatom producing one or more compounds responsible for the early programmed cell death (apoptosis) of the male gonad and the androgenic gland of the protandric shrimp Hippolyte inermis Leach. The metabolite composition of both the ether and butanol extracts was studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in both electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) mode. The compounds were identified as trimethylsilyl (TMSi) derivatives. The structure of the fatty acids (FA) was confirmed after conversion to their methyl esters. The ether fraction of C. scutellum contained FA (76%), of which 30% were saturated (SFA), 24% monounsaturated (MUFA) and 22% polyunsaturated (PUFA). Mono-(8%) and diglycerides (3%) as well as sterols (5%) and isoprenoid compounds (4%) were also found in this fraction. The butanol extract consisted of FA (45%), carbohydrates (25%), amino acids and N-containing metabolites (10%), fatty alcohols (9%), glycerides (4%) and organic acids (3%). In the literature, many reports deal with the chemistry and the chemical ecology of planktonic diatoms; contrastingly, benthic species are still less studied, especially with respect to their chemical composition, due to their difficult cultivation. Hence, our investigation represents a preliminary approach to clarify on chemical bases the ecological role of Cocconeis on decapods in the marine benthos, as well as a description of the metabolic pattern of this benthic diatom.

Three wild populations of crucifix crab Charybdis feriatus were sampled and muscle was analyzed for proximate composition, amino acid and fatty acid composition, aimed to quantify and compare the nutritional quality from three different locations in China. Results showed that crude protein content in muscle of female crucifix crab C. feriatus from Zhoushan (ZS) and Xiapu (XP) (84.84%-88.35%) were significantly higher than that of crucifix crab C. feriatus from Qionghai (QH) (74.33%), while there was no significant difference in terms of crude fat content (3.82%-4.07%). The highest content of ash was found in muscle of crucifix crab C. feriatus from QH (5.36%). The muscle of crucifix crab C. feriatus from ZS and XP had significantly higher contents of total amino acids, essential amino acids, non-essential amino acids and delicious amino acids than those of QH group (P < 0.05). The total saturated and unsaturated fatty acid content in the muscle of crucifix crab C. feriatus from three wild populations showed significant difference (P < 0.05). The ZS group had highest content of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (33.64%) and total content of EPA and DHA (22.85%) as well, followed by XP and QH group (P < 0.05). Overall, the differences in chemical composition in muscle of C. feriatus from different locations could be attributed to environmental variables and maturation stage.
