Irrigation regime and fertilizer nitrogen (N) are considered as the most effective agricultural management systems to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from crop fields, but few studies have involved saline-alkaline paddy soil. Gas emitted from saline-alkaline paddy fields (1-year-old and 57-year-old) was collected during rice growing seasons by the closed chamber method. Compared to continuous flooding irrigation, lower average CH 4 flux (by 22.81% and 23.62%), but higher CO 2 flux (by 24.84% and 32.39%) was observed from intermittent irrigation fields. No significant differences of N 2 O flux were detected. Application rates of N fertilizer were as follows: (1) No N (N0); (2) 60 kg ha −1 (N60); (3) 150 kg ha −1 (N150); and (4) 250 kg ha −1 (N250). The cumulative emissions of GHG and N fertilizer additions have positive correlation, and the largest emission was detected at the rate of 250 kg N ha −1 (N250). Global warming potential (GWP, CH 4 + N 2 O + CO 2 ) of the 57-year-old field under the N250 treatment was up to 4549 ± 296 g CO 2 -eq m −2 , approximately 1.5-fold that of N0 (no N application). In summary, the results suggest that intermittent irrigation would be a better regime to weaken the combined GWP of CH 4 and N 2 O, but N fertilizer contributed positively to the GWP.

Abstract:The study of greenhouse gas emissions has become a global focus, but few studies have considered saline-alkali paddy fields. Gas samples and saline-alkali soil samples were collected during the green, tillering, booting, heading and grain filling stages. The emission fluxes of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O as well as the pH, soil soluble salt, available nitrogen, and soil organic carbon contents were detected to reveal the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission laws and influence factors in saline-alkali paddy fields. Overall, GHG emissions of paddy soil during the growing season increased, then decreased, and then increased again and peaked at booting stage. The emission fluxes of CO 2 and CH 4 were observed as having two peaks and a single peak, respectively. Both the total amount of GHG emission and its different components of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O increased with the increasing reclamation period of paddy fields. A positive correlation was found between the respective emission fluxes of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O and the available nitrogen and SOC, whereas a negative correlation was revealed between the fluxes of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O and soil pH and soil conductivity. The study is beneficial to assessing the impact of paddy reclamation on regional greenhouse gas emissions and is relevant to illustrating the mechanisms concerning the carbon cycle in paddy soils.

Soil microbial communities respond to spatial and temporal variations in environmental conditions (e.g., saturation and ambient temperatures) as reflected in the dynamics of microbially produced greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes (primarily CO2, N2O, and CH4) emitted from soil surfaces. Despite considerable progress in resolving key soil microbial processes, their quantification remains largely empirical with limited predictability. We report a mechanistic and analytical modeling framework for integrating local environmental effects on GHG‐producing microbial processes primarily in soil aggregates (or other hot spots) and the upscaling of these to regional GHG fluxes. The mechanistic model enables systematic evaluation of how soil structural features (e.g., aggregation and layers), spatial variability, and dynamic ambient conditions (e.g., temperature and hydration) affect soil microbial functioning. The upscaling of microbial processes from aggregates of different sizes to soil profiles and landscapes implements mechanistically derived microbial response functions with spatial information on soil type, land cover, and resource distribution. The modeling framework was evaluated using reported field data for seasonal N2O emissions from subarctic regions resulting in reasonable agreement. The proposed analytical framework offers a practical compromise balancing a simplified representation of dynamic microbial processes that respond to local conditions with an upscalable representation of soil GHG fluxes over landscapes under changing environmental conditions.
