Seasonal and diurnal variations in net carbon dioxide flux throughout the year from soil in paddy field

Abstract: In contrast to upland croplands, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission from soils has rarely been investigated previously in fields with paddy rice cultivation. In this study, we hypothesized that CO 2 emission from paddy soils is suppressed to be a low level due the soil submergence for months for paddy rice cultivation and conducted a continuous measurement of net CO 2 flux from the soil/water surface of a paddy field throughout the year, including both the submerged and drained periods. The net CO 2 flux was gene… Show more

“…The calibration coefficient is 1.24. It is based on the study of net CO 2 flux of paddy fields with the temperate monsoon climate [26], a climate condition which is similar to that of western Jilin Province. The emission fluxes of CH 4 and N 2 O are significantly correlated with that of CO 2 , as described below, so the calibration coefficient is also applied for the calculation of CH 4 and N 2 O flux.…”

“…More studies are required to address the temporal accumulation of biomass and products within the aggregates that will affect emission dynamics as has been observed in previous soil column scale experiments (Ebrahimi & Or, ; Rabot et al, ). Additionally, input data from field observations (e.g., temperature and respiration) for seasonal dynamics of GHG emissions have been used as daily averaged data and thus neglect important diurnal effects that has been shown to impact GHG emissions (Nishimura et al, ; Shurpali et al, ).…”
