Seasonal and annual variations in abundance and species composition of fish and macrocrustracean communities on a Scottish sandy beach

Abstract: Forty-three species of fishes and 16 species of larger crustaceans were caught by trawl and seine during a 4 yr study on a sandy beach on the west coast of Scotland. There were considerable differences in the species composition of the trawl and seine catches such that neither alone provided an adequate description of the sampled cornnlunity. Approximately monthly s a m p h g demonstrated a clear seasonal cycle in abundance and species composition. A few species were resident on the beach all year round; the m… Show more

“…The greater diversity in the low tide catches, independent of the time of day, observed at Pontal do SuI, was also present in the collections of DELANCEY (1989) on the American East coast. While the ichthyofauna ofPontal do SuI, apparently, maintains between daytime and nighttime species composition, in other beaches this species composition appears to change between these periods (LASLAK 1984;GIBSON et of. 1993).…”

“…However, the viability of these indexes should be tested within each biological context. For example, it should be possible to distinguish the natural seasonal movements of the ichthyofauna related to their recruitment and reproduction patterns (Gibson et al, 1993;Pessanha et al, 2003;Félix et al, 2007;Félix-Hackdart et al, 2010) from other fluctuations resulting from stochastic variations or anthropogenic impacts, in addition to how the indexes respond to these changes.…”

“…A great variety of organisms live in such habitats and fishes and crustaceans play important roles in these communities (Brown & McLachlan 1991). In northern Europe, the numerically dominant macrofauna consists of a few fish species, especially plaice Pleuronectes platessa and gobies of the genus Pomatoschistus, and 2 crustaceans (Crangon crangon and Carcinus maenas) (Macer 1967, Pihl & Rosenberg 1982, Evans 1983, Gibson et al 1993. Here, as in many other similar nursery habitats, juvenile stages predominate and their small size renders them vulnerable to a wide variety of predators .…”
