Season of Birth and Risk of Atopic Disease among Children and Adolescents

Abstract: Atopy itself is independent of season of birth, whereas asthma is more prevalent among subjects born during the autumn. Regarding asthma, these results suggest that the first months of life enclose a period of particular vulnerability towards environmental risk factors, especially exposure to aeroallergens like HDM.

“…However, a lower early fetal growth trajectory (lower head circumference growth velocity between 11 and 18 weeks) [52] and a lower lung function in early infancy (mean (95% CI) FEV 0.4 123.7 (114.6-133.5) ml in non-atopic wheezers vs 139.0 (132.2-146.2) ml in non-atopic non-wheezers) [53] were associated with non-atopic wheeze. In a study done in Northern Europe, being born in the autumn was associated with an increased risk [54]. Threatened abortions and exposure to isoxsuprine, a tocolytic drug, were both independently associated [33].…”

“…All associations were adjusted for gender [21][22][23] and season of birth. [23][24][25] All statistical analysis are based on a linear quasipoison regression, while in the graphical presentation of the results, the children are partitioned into 3 groups based on the number of LRI. Statistical modeling was done in R version 2.15.1. and Matlab R2012b using in-house algorithms.…”

“…Pregnancy length and very early childhood were reported to be important in the development of atopy, and timing of the environmental exposure was of importance for the immune system (13). The first months of life are supposed to be an enclosed period of particular vulnerability towards environmental risk factors, especially exposure to aero-allergens (14).…”
