Search for trinucleon decay in the Majorana Demonstrator

Abstract: The Majorana Demonstrator is an ultra low-background experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76 Ge. The heavily shielded array of germanium detectors, placed nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, also allows searches for new exotic physics. We present the first limits for tri-nucleon decay-specific modes and invisible decay modes for Ge isotopes. We find a half-life limit of 4.9 × 10 25 yr for the decay 76 Ge(ppn) → 73 Zn e + π + and 4.… Show more

“…The combined limit of CUORE, CUORE-0 and Cuoricino on the 130 Te 0νββ half-life is 1.5 • 10 25 yr [69]. It follows the corresponding limits in 136 Xe and 76 Ge, namely 1.1 • 10 26 yr at 90% C. L. by the KamLAND-Zen Collaboration [79] and 8.0 • 10 25 yr at 90% C. L. by the GERDA Collaboration [80]. Eventually, CUORE is expected to raise its half-life limit sensitivity at 9.0 • 10 25 yr at 90% C. L. [81], therefore ensuring the central role played by thermal detectors in the forthcoming future.…”

“…Unfortunately each of these requests implies often contradictory constraints and a compromise solution is usually unavoidable. As a result, the list of isotopes commonly under study includes [4]: 48 Ca, 76 Ge, 82 Se, 96 Zr, 100 Mo, 116 Cd, 130 Te, 136 Xe, and 150 Nd. Among these, 130 Te presents important advantages (Table 1) and it results to be a very favorable choice.…”

“…One also expects similar suppression in this extradimensional model for B-and L-violating decays involving trinucleon initial states, such as ppp → ℓ + π + π + and ppn → ℓ + π + , mediated by 10-fermion operators, or ppp → ℓ + ℓ ′+ ℓ ′′+ and ppn → ℓ + ℓ ′+ν , mediated by 12-fermion operators. Recent experimental bounds on trinucleon decays include [65,66].…”

“…Baryon number violation by more than two units has not been well explored, with sparse theoretical [119] and experimental [120][121][122][123] studies. As mentioned before, one particularly well-motivated case that falls into this category is ∆B = ∆L = 3, as mediated in the SM by non-perturbative electroweak instantons.…”
