Search for standard model production of four top quarks with same-sign and multilepton final states in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {TeV} $$ s = 13 TeV

Abstract: A search for standard model production of four top quarks ( ) is reported using events containing at least three leptons ( ) or a same-sign lepton pair. The events are produced in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 at the LHC, and the data sample, recorded in 2016, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 . Jet multiplicity and flavor are used to enhance signal sensitivity, and dedicated control regions are used to constrain the domi… Show more

“…Nonetheless, significant progress by the experimental collaborations has been made recently. Both ATLAS and CMS analysed about 36 fb −1 of 13 TeV data each [47,48], with constraints approaching the SM rate. Interestingly, ATLAS reported comparable sensitivities in the combination of single lepton plus opposite-sign dilepton searches when compared to the combination of same-sign dilepton plus three lepton searches.…”

“…For this reason, partners of the top quark are ubiquitous in models of new physics at the weak scale, and their production often results in multi-top signatures at the LHC, leading to many interesting phenomena. The four top final state has been previously investigated [8][9][10][11][12] and is starting to be visible in experimental analysis [13,14]. However, even more tops in the final state naturally occur under simple assumptions and provides a spectacular collider signature and a complementary method to search for new physics.…”

“…The simulated events are then preselected using requirements based in Ref. [30], which can be summarized as: exactly two same-sign leptons, H jet T > 300 GeV, E miss T > 50 GeV, and either ≥ 5 jets of which at least three are b-tagged, or ≥ 6 jets of which at least two are b-tagged.…”

“…Most of these articles consider heavy NP, above the tt production threshold. Searches for SM four-top production have been performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at center-of-mass energies of 8 TeV [9,10,26,27] and 13 TeV [11,[28][29][30][31][32][33]. These searches have focused on either the single-lepton (1L) and oppositesign dilepton (2LOS) channels, or the same-sign dileptons (2LSS) and multilepton (ML) channels.…”
