Search for new scintillators for x- and γ-ray detectors

Abstract: Five elpasolite structure chlorides and bromides: Cs2NaYC16, Cs2NaLaC16, Cs2NaGdC16, Cs2LiLaC16 and Cs2LiYBr6 doped by Ce3 ions have been investigated and results of scintillation and luminescent properties of studied crystals under optical,x-and 'y-ray excitation are presented. The position and splitting of Ce3 5d levels in all compounds were determined and result has a good agreement with theory.

“…The summation over the matrix element connecting an initial state |i with a final state |f via the dipole operator µ gives the oscillator strength [28]. The ratio of τ/λ 3 between the anomalous Ce 3+ emission and the ordinary Ce 3+ emission is close to unity; see column 5 in table 7. This means that the anomalous Ce 3+ emission is an electric dipole allowed transition.…”

“…The slightly lower values than unity can be related with the difference between the oscillator strength of the anomalous and that of the ordinary Ce 3+ emissions. From equation (7), the faster decay time of anomalous emission in bromoelpasolites than in chloride compounds can be related to the larger refractive index in bromide than in chloride compounds.…”
