Search for microscopic black holes in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt {s} = {\text{7TeV}} $$

Abstract: A search for microscopic black holes in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb −1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011. Events with large total transverse energy have been analyzed for the presence of multiple energetic jets, leptons, and photons, which are typical signals of evaporating semiclassical and quantum black holes, and string balls. Agreement with the expected standard model backgrounds, which are… Show more

“…95% exclusion limits on σ×B for the M J + / E T search (dashed blue), the M J + / E T +N CA search (solid red), and the M J + / E T +N kT search (dash-dotted brown) for signal G 0 , which has only 4 final state partons. The exclusion limits given by the ATLAS high multiplicity search [56] (dashdotted green line) and the CMS black hole search [57] (dashed black) as well as the NLO gluino production cross section (grey solid) are also shown. The systematic uncertainty on the background is assumed to be 30%.…”

“…The CMS black hole search [57], which makes use of 4.7 fb −1 at 7 TeV, is also sensitive to high multiplicity final states. This search makes use of 16 search regions, each of which corresponds to different S T min and N min cuts.…”
