Search for CP violation in the phase space of D0 → π−π+π0 decays with the energy test

Abstract: A search for CP violation in D0 → π−π+π0 decays is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1. An unbinned model-independent approach provides sensitivity to local CP violation within the two-dimensional phase space of the decay. The method is validated using the Cabibbo-favoured channel D0 → K−π+π0 and background regions of the signal mode. The results are consistent with CP symmetry in this decay.

We study the penguin over tree ratio in D→ππ decays. This ratio can serve as a probe for rescattering effects. Assuming the Standard Model and in the isospin limit, we derive expressions that relate both the magnitude and the phase of this ratio to direct CP asymmetries and branching fractions. We find that the current data suggest that rescattering is large. A dedicated experimental analysis with current and future data will be able to significantly reduce the errors on these determinations, and enable us to check if indeed there is significant rescattering in D→ππ decays. We propose a method of measuring the CP-odd part of the Yukawa interaction of Higgs boson and $$\tau $$ τ leptons by observing the forward–backward asymmetry in the decay $$H \rightarrow \tau ^+ \, \tau ^- \, \gamma $$ H → τ + τ - γ . The source of such asymmetry is the interference of the CP-even loop-level contribution coming from $$H \rightarrow Z \, \gamma \rightarrow \tau ^+ \, \tau ^- \, \gamma $$ H → Z γ → τ + τ - γ decay channel with the contribution from tree-level CP-odd Yukawa interaction. We find that the CP violating effect is maximum when the invariant mass of the $$\tau ^+\,\tau ^-$$ τ + τ - pair is equal to the mass of the Z boson. We propose and utilise various Dalitz plot asymmetries to quantify the maximal size of the asymmetry and perform Monte Carlo simulations to study the feasibility of measuring it in the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
