Search for Correlations Between Genotypes and Electrophysiological Patterns in Migraine: The MTHFR C677T Polymorphism and Visual Evoked Potentials

Abstract: Interictally, migraineurs have on average a reduction in habituation of pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (PR-VEP) and in mitochondrial energy reserve. 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is involved in folate metabolism and its C677T polymorphism may be more prevalent in migraine. The aim of this study was to search in migraineurs for a correlation between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and the PR-VEP profile. PR-VEP were recorded in 52 genotyped migraine patients: 40 female, 24 without (Mo… Show more

“…A significant positive impact of the T-allele on RP-VEP test results was demonstrated, i. e. decreased N75/P100 amplitudes and a positive habituation index. These results agree with literature data [15]. The authors present equivalent changes in RP-VEP test results in the patients with C677T MTHFR polymorphism.…”

“…Authors discuss the role of hyperhomocysteinemia in establishing neuronal hyperexcitability and subsequent CNV habituation deficiency in migraine. On the other hand, Magis et al showed an absence of changes in VEP habituation in TT homozygotes, as compared to control, and an increase of habituation, as compared to C/T and C/C subgroups [15]. The acquired results may be explained by the activating effects of homocysteine metabolites (DL-homocysteic acid) on serotoninergic transmission.…”

“…The Figure summarizes the process of identifying eligible studies. After title and abstract evaluation we were left with 27 studies 6‐19,24‐36 . We excluded 6 more studies after evaluating the remaining articles in their entirety and were left with 21 studies for this analysis.…”

“…To date, a lack of habituation in migraineurs has been the principal and reproducible interictal abnormality observed in studies of evoked potentials, such as visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Previous VEP studies revealed heterogeneous results; a lack of VEP habituation may correlate with metabolic abnormalities and decreased thalamo-cortical activity [11,12].…”
