Search for charged current coherent pion production on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

Abstract: The SciBooNE Collaboration has performed a search for charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, νµ 12 C → µ −12 Cπ + , with two distinct data samples. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the cross section ratio of charged current coherent pion production to the total charged current cross section at 0.67 × 10 −2 at mean neutrino energy 1.1 GeV and 1.36 × 10 −2 at mean neutrino energy 2.2 GeV.

“…Many measurements of NC [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] and CC [19,[25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33]] coherent pion production have been made at neutrino energies of 1 ≲ E ν ≲ 100 GeV using both ν μ andν μ beams and a variety of scattering target materials (carbon, neon, aluminum, argon, Freon, glass, marble, and iron). Measurements made before the discovery of neutrino oscillations were mostly made at E ν > 10 GeV.…”

“…SciBooNE measured the ratio of the NC coherent pion production cross section to the ν μ CC total (all scattering processes) cross section to be ð1.16 AE 0.24Þ × 10 −2 . The first searches for ν μ CC coherent pion production at E ν ≲ 2 GeV were performed by the K2K [31] and SciBooNE [32] experiments. These experiments used the same CH-based detector in two different neutrino beams.…”

“…More recent model dependent searches by K2K [19] and SciBooNE [20] at neutrino energies of 0.5-2 GeV suffer from low statistics and reported null results. Recently the MINERνA experiment published a measurement of this cross section for neutrino energies between 1.5 and 20.0 GeV [21].…”
