Abstract:Results from the sealing of porosity by impregnation show that below a certain wetting angle of the sealant, high penetration depths are achieved. However, only sealants with very low curing shrinkages can prevent the transport of electrolyte through the coating.Various sealant types and impregnation methods are discussed, and factors influencing impregnation and sealing ability of sealants are reviewed. Experimental results from the sealing of plasma-sprayed aluminum-oxide coatings are presented.

Effects of sealant and sealing procedure on corrosion resistance of high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) sprayed coatings were studied. HVOF-sprayed CrC-20NiCr coatings were sealed using three commercial sealants based on phenolics and epoxy. Penetration depth of sealants, measured by fluorescent microscope technique, was between 19 µm and 340 µm depending on sealant, sealing condition or sealing procedure. It was found that sealing on rotation status was more effective than that on stationary specimen due to the Coriolis effect of fluid in pores of the coating. From the CASS results, corrosion resistance of properly sealed CrC-20NiCr coatings was equal to that of hexa-valent chromium plating.

Atmospheric plasma sprayed alumina-titania (Al 2 O 3 -13%TiO 2 ), coated on stainless steel (XC18), were characterized. The coating structure and morphology were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Their presented micro cracks, laminar splats. The coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction. The main phase transformation is that of a-Al 2 O 3 into metastable c-Al 2 O 3 . The a-Al 2 O 3 phase is due to the occurrence of partially melted particles Electrochemical behaviours of coatings were mainly investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.01 M [K 3 Fe(CN) 6 /K 4 Fe(CN) 6 ] as a function of process parameters. Also, schematic equivalent circuit was proposed. The results were expected to facilitate the understanding and improvement of the coating behaviours.
