Sealing ability of thermoplasticized gutta‐percha in root canal obturation using a sectional vs. a single‐phase technique

Abstract: Properly prepared straight root canals of freshly extracted maxillary canines and central incisors were used to evaluate the sealing ability of the sectional thermoplasticized gutta-percha obturation technique, with or without sealer and the single-phase thermoplasticized gutta-percha filling technique. The teeth were divided into 3 groups (A, B, C) of 20 teeth and were obturated using the 3 thermoplasticized gutta-percha techniques. Group A: single phase with sealer; group B: sectional technique without seale… Show more

“…In all previous studies the needle tip was placed within the recommended distance from the apical foramen (3-5 mm), whereas in the present study the tip was placed at 3 different levels and only in one group (group A) was the needle tip within the recommended distance. Thus the results from group A in this study can be compared with the results of previous studies, and the 30% of underfilled canals found in group A was in agreement with the 30% of underfilled canals in the study of Mann & McWalter (10) and the 35% in that of Veis et al (20) in straight canals.…”

“…The combination of dye penetration and the clear- ing technique has been used before in a few studies (8,20) for the evaluation of seahng properties of endodontic filling materials. In this experimental study the sealing ability of injection-molded thermoplasticized guttapercha was measured by the assessment of linear penetration of India ink in teeth previously cleared.…”
