Abstract:Sea trout Salmo trutta migration in the Rhine delta, The Netherlands, was studied using the NEDAP TRAIL System®, consisting of a chain of fixed detection stations and transponders, each transmitting a unique code. From 16 December 1996 to 31 December 2000, 195 (34%) out of 580 tagged sea trout were detected. Inland migration of sea trout was observed through the sluices in the dam between the Wadden Sea and Lake IJsselmeer (Afsluitdijk), the Nieuwe Waterweg and the sluices in the Haringvliet Dam. “…It has been reported from other countries that sea trout can home accurately to their natal streams to spawn (e.g. Armstrong & Herbert, 1997;Bij De Vaate et al, 2003). According to Aarestrup & Jepsen (1998), in the Black Sea basin, the large freshwater discharge of some rivers may attract mature sea trout from other populations.…”

“…Het zoute water verdeelt zich nooit evenredig over een estuarium. Menging van het zoute en zoete water zal met een Kier en de bestaande structuren dan ook beperkt van omvang zijn (Jacobs et al 2003 Vaate et al 2003). Dit soort kennis is geheel niet beschikbaar voor kleine diadrome vissen.…”

“…Passage success of sea trout alongside the two sluice complexes in the Afsluitdijk was assessed using RFID inductive coupling telemetry (NEDAP system), where based on 70 tagged sea trout at least 47 % successfully entered Lake IJsselmeer in the current situation (De Vaate et al 2003). Passage success of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) was indicated to be 16-33% based on passage behaviour of 25 sea lampreys ).…”
