Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies in the South Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: Abstract. The hydrographic data of 61 years were used to study the regular formation of the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and their evaluation in the South Eastern Mediterranean Sea in front of the northern Egyptian waters. The area of study lies between [31][32][33] o N and 25-34 o E. Time distribution of SSTA values display both positive and negative cycles. The periods of these cycles fluctuated between 8 and 15 years. These cycles are nearly associated with the 11 year cycle of sun-spots activit… Show more

“…[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Previous work strengthens the suggestion of oscillation, 13 rather than a continuous increase due to global warming. Examining variations in the air temperature and hydrography in the South-eastern Mediterranean region, together with the phenomenon of the River Nile drought, shows that a 70-year cycle appears to be one of the most affective contributors to the climatic change in this area.…”

“…8 The last Nile drought occurred during 1979-1984. 14,15 Previous research 8,10,12 proved that both the air temperature and the hydrographic parameters were decreasing before that period, then increased after it. This paper may be considered as an attempt to illustrate a different viewpoint to the discussion about the sea-level rise problem.…”

“…For the sea, not only studies about hydrological trends but also studies about dense water formation and circulation must take into account the Interannual variability (Millot, 2007). Maiyza (1984) and Maiyza et al (1995) studied the long term variation of water temperature in the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea. Time distribution of SSTA values display both positive and negative cycles.…”

“…Puffer fishes and other non-indigenous species (NIS), have been established their selves in the ecosystem of the Eastern Mediterranean suggesting that the conditions are becoming more and more suitable for the growth, reproduction and survival of tropical species offering the aliens various advantages when competing with native species [61,29,62,63]. Age and growth are the most important characteristic features and specific for each fish species.…”
